China at Bay is an eyewitness account of the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war in 1937. In the preface, the author Wilfred L. Chester, writes that “the chapters are a series of discursive studies of the relations of China and Japan with each other and with the outside world…”, rather than a “record of events”. “The undeclared war which Japan forced upon China in July, 1937, has naturally supplied most of the subjects discussed, but a brief survey of past events has been prefixed which may prove useful to those readers who have no especial knowledge of Far East problems”, he adds.
