Émile Levier (1839-1911) was born in Switzerland, and educated as a medic. But he also developed an interest in plant life, and started collected speciments in his homeland and later in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

In 1890 he embarked on an expedition to Caucasus with his friend and co-collector S. Sommier. His travel-account from this journey was published in 1894.
