Le Maroc by Pierre Dumas was written to introduce the sights, culture and major centres of Morocco to tourists in the 20′s and 30′s. The book starts with Tangier and covers Ouezzan, Rabat, Casablanca, the villages of the south, Meknes, Fez and Taza.
A huge part of the appeal of the book are the 205 heliogravures depicting various Moroccan scenes. Heliogravure is the oldest procedure for reproducing photographic images and uses good quality thick paper. Although this technique produces an incomparably rich palette of blacks and shades of grey, it has all but disappeared over the decades as it is a costly and time-consuming process.
In the early part of the 20th century, heliogravure was the method of choice for reproductions appearing in high quality books and for artistic photography, and was considered an artistic medium in its own right. The last major publication that employed heliogravure dates to 1932.
